About SPOONIES

The concept of spoons to represent the lived experiences of people with disabilities was the brainchild of Christine Miserandino. As Miserandino explains, a person with a disability has a finite amount of energy in a day. This can be represented with spoons. For each task that the person completes, energy is depleted, and thus a spoon is taken away. The physical representation of this energy loss through spoons is meant to demonstrate the choices a person with disabilities must make each day—how, when, and where to spend their energy. Spoonies is a term intended to honor our myriad experiences with disabilities and how they shape our lives.

About the logo

The link design was inspired by the support this group provides for those who have disabilities. A spoon silhouette was chosen to form the overall horizontal shape, demonstrating the strength of the collective. The link/loop was left unfinished to resemble a ribbon - usually a symbol of awareness.
